About
Sophia Stamatopoulou-Robbins (GR/US) is an anthropologist, writer and filmmaker whose research spans environmental politics, waste infrastructures, and toxicity, with long-term fieldwork experience in Palestine/Israel and Greece.
As part of the looping selection of film works which will be running throughout the evening at our opening night, we are happy to present ‘النفايات تحت الأرض (Waste Underground)’, a film by Sophia Stamatopoulou-Robbins.
Created in collaboration with Palestinian cinematographer Ali al-Deek, Waste Underground (15’, 2017) explores a landfill in the West Bank as a form of underground storage - seen through the lens of Palestinian futurity.
The film was first screened at the Khalil Sakakini Cultural center during the Sharjah Biennial 13, Tamawuj in Ramallah, in August 2017. It has also be screened as part of the Jerusalem Show iX at al-Ma’mal in the Old City of Jerusalem in 2018.
